The Natural System

Economic ideology can be as conditioned, and as dogmatically entrenched, as religious belief.

I would like to shift the parameters of this debate beyond the traditional battleground of left versus right, capitalism versus communism. Through deliberation, indoctrination or instinct, most have already pinned a flag to their mast.

It is my view that we have never really taken control of human society. This may seem demeaning to the real advances made since the Enlightenment. However, compared to where we need to be, we are still very much fumbling around in the cave. We have dabbled in different flavours of economic and political organisation, but are far from possessing the means required to deliver a sustainable society. Rather than give our current mode of existence the credence that may be inferred from some of the common names applied (capitalism, liberal democracy), I prefer to describe it as the Natural System. Our lives are played out in an arena still broadly governed by natural laws, with any system we have formed largely operating in alignment with our natural tendencies.

Thus, before attacking the current orthodoxy, I want to stress that I endeavour not to point (m)any fingers. The fault lies primarily with collective inaction, rather than historical actions or movements. The opportunities for improvement are endless.
